A Bacchanalian Terra-Cotta Group By CLODION 1738-1814.

The animated scene is composed of four figures grouped with rare skill and executed with consummate art. It represents a Satyr holding in his arms a Bacchante whose left breast he is pressing, while an infant Satyr with uplifted face and parted lips stands in expectation at her feet; with one hand she is preparing to lift him up, and with the other, pressing the juice from a bunch of grapes into a cup held by a second Bacchante standing at her side. Besides being a perfect example of the much valued Terr-Cotta productions which established Clodion's reputation in Rome, this admirable group also affords a thorough illustration of the artist's earnest and varied studies, inasmuch as, if the modelling of the adult Satyr shows the influence of that most
