She inherited them from her father the great Gustavus Adolphus, who had possessed himself of them on the reduction of Prague during the Thirty Years War. Christina being a very religious woman and a devout Catholic, abdicated the throne of a protestant country, and went to live in Rome, the capital of Catholicism, though not until she had made certain that the succession would pass to her cousin.
