17th August 1914.

Dear Mr. Frick,

I have your letter of the 25th July this morning and apparently it must have come across part of the way and gone back in one of the German ships.

When I cabled you some time ago I feared what has occurred and put myself in as good a position as possible to stand it. I suggested your taking an interest in my Lake Superior Investment shares for the reason that you expressed a willingness to take Grenfell's if they could be had. When I could not carry out my plan about these shares I decided to sell my pictures which I did to Charlie Carstairs and this letter is confidential unless he tells you of it. I do not know who he got to join him but he paid me a very good price considering the general business conditions and he was very nice about it in every way.

It is too early yet for me to have any opinion either about the period of the War or its earlier tendencies but
