Pride's Crossing, Massachusetts, July 29, 1908.


Dear Mr. Carstairs:

                  I am just in receipt of yours of the twenty-first. 

Quite right that you retained the Constable; if I had known that it was doing you some good you might have had it longer. I have, however, some curiosity, to see it. Just cabled to know when the Romney was shipped or will be shipped. The finance committee of the steel company expect to call the latter part of next week and I thought likely I might be able to show them both pictures.

                   I think you made a good trade with Mr. W.,

much better than I thought you would be able to make. It will make a wonderful change in his collection.

                  Mrs. Gardner dined with us on Sunday evening. 

She is very remarkable in many ways; among other things has the energy of youth.

                  It would have given me great pleasure to have 

gone over to see the Romney, but it seemed out of the [end of page]
