Dear Mr. Frick,
I regret having been unsuccessful in arranging the purchase of the Rembrandt for you at $200,000. – I worked hard but my persuasive powers were unavailing – I must however tell you that it was not because I was satisfied with the profit, but simply my great desire that you should possess this matchless masterpiece. I have pictured it in your gallery since first beginning negotiations for it over four weeks ago.
I should imagine from Roland's letter and your lack of response that you consider it expensive, in this you are mistaken, for it is the greatest single portrait existing + you mustn't overlook, is a portrait of Rembrandt himself. Terrell has been offered $150,000. for his small portrait painted in 1645, this one represents Rembrandt at the zenith of his powers 1658. It is most powerful, grand, monumental. These are not exagerated sic. terms. Bode speaks of it as the most dignified of all Rembrandts
