heading in green ink: Theotocopuli Il Greco. 1548 (?)-1625.
Was born in Crete. Went to Italy, probably to Venice, first. year in green ink: 1570 Went to Rome where he was patronized by the miniaturist Guilio Clovio. Painted for the Cardinal Nepote Alessandro Farnese. year in green ink: 1577? Moved to Toledo. Married and had a son, Jorge Manuel Theotocopuli, who (in 1628) was appointed sculptor and architect to the Cathedral of Toledo.
Greco is said to have earned quite a fortune and to have spent it very ostentatiously on his house. It is recorded that he even had musicians play for him during his meals.
