COPY IN PAINTINGS LETTER BOOK.

New York, December 22, 1914.

Messrs. Duveen Bros., 720 Fifth Avenue, New York. Gentlemen: I regret exceedingly that the two Bouchers you have hung here on approval do not give me the pleasure I had expected. I have tried to convince myself that they were suitable for the place in which they were hung, but it is impossible: the more I looked at them the less I liked them. I have had them rehung in our drawing rooms and the Turners put in their place. I think they are in a safe position, but as they are here at your risk, I leave it to you whether you remove them now or leave them hang where they are for the present. Yours very truly,
