Fifth Ave & 70th Street, New York City. Dear Sir;- In connection with the portrait of Rose Gorder [begin insertion] C [end insertion] by Whistler in the New York Herald of Sunday, March 7th, third section, page three, the following information will interest you. Major Emery M. Hamilton, solder, engineer and artist, was an intimate associate of James McNeil Whistler, Homer D. Martin and other prominent artists; he was called in as a friend of Martin's at the famous suit. I am a merchant; I am not an artist; I know nothing of Art or art values. Last summer I know that Major Hamilton delivered an address before the Gloucester Historical Society, he called it I believe, "Twenty Four Hours with Whistler"; he described in that address, he has told me, just how Whistler painted "The Brown Girl". The painting was done immediately after a breakfast at which the Model, Major Hamilton and a number of other people were present; the entire picture was painted in one day after breakfast, Whistler working until dark. The next day Whistler photographed the picture of The Brown Girl, giving one of the photographs to Major Hamilton as a matter of friendship and as a souvenir of the occasion. Now here is the point: here is the reason for this letter. As you know, Whistler never signed his name; all his pictures are signed with this "Butterfly" only. The photograph which Whistler gave to Major Hamilton however, is the only thing I know of in existence which has written in the margin the name of Whistler, as well as his Butterfly.
