My dear Sir,
My dear Sir,
As telegraphed you this m'n'g [morning] a delayed letter reached us this m'n'g [morning] from Mr Watson, which certainly indicates a desire on his part to own the picture by Jules Breton, & although Mr Watson makes a lower offer, as a matter of courtesy it seemed to me that you would approve of a delay of a couple of days until we could hear from him further.

Mr Knoedler feels exceedingly annoyed in the matter, but I assured him that I felt this course would be perfectly agreeable to you & that you would not care to own the picture & at the same time feel that Mr Watson had been deprived of it though an unforseen circumstance beyond his control. I enclose you the copy of a cable sent Mr Watson on Monday at the expiration of his option, in order that no misunderstanding might occur, also copy of his letter, and cable sent him today, that you may know the situation in detail
