MEMORANDUM MAY 9, 1919. Mr. Joseph Duveen called and explained the reason he did not write me in sending the list of pictures and other objects of art as per list dated February 20th,- that they were all here on approval was - in the event of my finally deciding to purchase or keep any or all of them he wanted the sale considered as made prior to February 20th in order to escape the 10% tax. He thoroughly understands that they are here on approval and subject to his risk, and also subject to his right to remove them at any time and that he could not consider I had purchased any of them unless he had it in writing to that effect. He said he had charged them to me on his books in order to keep himself straight, but that charge would be cancelled if I finally decided not to make the purchase. (Signed) Joseph Duveen, H.C.F. A.B.
