heading in green ink: Pierre Etienne Theodore Rousseau 1812-1867

An only child, was born in Paris. His father, a native of the Jura, who had married in Paris, was a merchant-tailor, much respected by all who knew him. (The elder Rousseau was a hero of the "Buttes Chaumont in 1814.) Young Rousseau accompanied his relation Pau de St. Martin on a sketching tour to Compiègne, soon afterward, entering the studio of Rémond. Became a champion of the New School of 1830 -- the Romantic School. Exhibited for the first time at the Royal Salon in the Louvre. Went to Normandy with his friend Charles de Laterge, with whom he quarreled -- and parted company.
