PAINTER OF MR. FRICK'S ART ACQUISITION

ANNOUNCEMENT in The Dispatch that Henry C. Frick has purchased at the auction sale of the Williams collection in New York the "Romany Girl," painted by George Fuller, is of interest to all who love art as it contributes to the great gallery of the Pittsburgh another gem on canvas from one of the most remarkable of American artists of the last generation. The "Romany Girl" was one of Fuller's most prized productions. It was one of the chief attractions of the National Academy exhibition of 1879, only five years previous to the death of the artist who was born in 1822. Among the exhibits of that year it was given most attention of writers of art matters. The subject was most appealing on account of the opportunity for rich color in both the complexion of the model and the costume. Fuller was born at Deerfield Mass., and when a mere boy developed unusual qualities both for appreciation of color and unerring draftsmanship. When he was 16 years of age he went with a party of civil engineers to Illinois, and in this work was for two years associated with Henry Kirke Brown, the sculptor, and in such atmosphere his talent for artistic work was rapidly developed.
