STAIR-CASE

18. A LOUIS XVI REGULATOR CLOCK. With movement by Ferdinand Berthoud (1727-1807), a famous inventor and maker of clocks and astronomical instruments, and the author of various works on horology. It is decorated on top with a large gilt bronze group representing Phoebus in his chariot rushing through the air, his bounding horses tearing at the clouds. The rectangular case is relieved by a medallion containing a barometer. The dial of the movement is encircled with the signs of the zodiac in ormolu. The vase is decorated with three gilt bronze plaques depicting the seasons winter, summer and autumn. All the metal work was designed by Clodion and executed and signed by Caffieri, 1767. 90,000.
