January 13th. 1916. re: -FRAGONARD ROOM Dear Mr. Frick, I am making my final visit to Paris on Tuesday next, where your room is now being painted. Mr. Duveen cables me that you wish both methods of lighting applied to the cove, and so of course I shall do it, but I feel that it is an unwise expenditure to carry out Mr. Decour's method, for I find that the brilliant light of the cove reflects into the picture. The fact is that in an ideally lit picture gallery there should be shadows above the pictures. As soon as the room is completed and despatched I shall follow in time to be present at its installation. I am sending a chandelier, which appeared to Mr. Duveen and me to be the best we saw, and which I think will look splendid in the room. I am having a temporary carpet made of the right colour, but in a cheap quality, to lay over the floor, until the actual new one is completed. The curtain material should be finished within a week or two. It has been a tremendous time in making in France, and so difficult is it to get things in France at present, that I have had the new carpet made in England at a saving of four months in time, and half the money in cost.
