Attributed to REMBRANDT VAN RYN (1607-1669) "OLD WOMAN WITH BIBLE" (Described as Rembrandt's Mother) Canvas, 29 3/4 inches by 39 inches Painted about 1650. AGED about seventy, with a furrowed face and downcast eyes. Seated in an armchair facing the spectator, a large bible bound in parchment on her lap, she lays her left hand, in which she holds her eyeglasses, upon it, her right hand rests against her body. On her grey hair she wears a large head-cloth, the front part of which is striped with colors, while the back is white, and falls on her shoulders. Her greenish-yellow gown s trimmed with fur at the breast, and shows a pleated chemisette at the throat and wrists. A board scarf of heavy stuff is folded round her waist. To the left a brownish-red curtain. Dark background. The evenly suffused light falls from about on the left. Mentioned by Bode, the Complete Works of Rembrandt, Vol. V. p. 194, No. 392. E.
