THOMAS GAINSBOROUGH, R.A. (1727-1788) PORTRAIT OF MRS. BAKER Canvas, 59 inches by 871/2 inches FULL length, standing, to left; light-colored dress cut low, scarf over shoulders; rocks on right. She was the daughter of James Clitherow, Esq, of Boston House, Middlesex; married Peter Wm. Baker, Esq, of Ranston, Dorsetshire. Signed and dated 1781. Exhibited; Royal Academy, 1882. Listed in Armstrong's "Gainsborough." Collection" Sir Randall Littlehales Baker, Ranston, Dorset-shire. Mrs. Baker's husband was on of the old "Peter Bakers" who built Baker Street. They were childless, and their property passed to Sir Edward Littlehales, who took the name of Baker on inheriting the property. 157 DN
