heading in green ink: Narcisse-Virgilio Diaz De La Peña. 1808-1876
The son of Spanish refugee patriots, was born at Bordeaux. Soon after his birth, he and his mother were deserted by his father who went to England. His mother became a governess for self-support. Later, they moved to Sèvres and settled among friends. At the age of ten, Diaz lost his mother, and was adopted by Michael Pavia, a Protestant clergyman who lived in retirement at Bellevue (near Sèvres.) When still quite young, he was stung by a viper, which caused the amputation of a leg. year in green ink: 1823 Was apprenticed to a printer, and later, to a maker of porcelains - there, he met Duprès. Painted for himself as his fancy dictated.
