heading in green ink: Le Lac de Garde - "Le Matin" -

It is of course, impossible to say which is the finest of Corot's pictures, for every work to which he gave serious attention in the last twelve years of his life, is a masterpiece....The most easily understood Corot is that of the "Lac de Garde," formerly in Mr. J. L. Forbes's Gallery in Chelsea. From our etching, it will be observed that the composition is well considered and the values delicate and delightful. The tender tones of pearly purity exhibited in this fine picture, entitle it to rank very highly among the important examples of the master. symbol in green ink: Ŧ
