heading in green ink: Jean Baptiste Camille Corot 1796-1875

Was born in Paris. His father was a prosperous hair-dresser, and his mother, a milliner. For seven years, he went to school in Rouen, his father's birth-place. Was apprenticed eight years to a draper. At the age of twenty-six, he refused to be apprenticed any longer, and studied painting first under Michallon, and then with Vitor Bortin. Visited Italy, and painted in Rome, where his work was admired by Aligny. Returned to Paris, and exhibited for the first time at the Salon. Went to Italy a second and third time and also travelled through Switzerland, the Netherlands, and England. Settled in Paris and Ville d'Avray, for the remainder of his life. symbol in green ink: Ŧ
