The son of a wealthy miller, was born in Suffolk County. Went to school at Lavenham and Dedham. Against his own will, he was made to follow his father's profession, but in the meantime he studied painting in the fields. Through the influence of Sir George Beaumont, he was allowed to go to London for a short time, to study art. year in green ink: 1799 Re-visited London and was admitted as a student at the Royal Academy, but his one true instructor was Nature. year in green ink: 1816 Secretly married Miss Mary Bicknell. year in green ink: 1827 Took up his residence in Hampstead.
