The son of Paul Wouwerman, a native of Alkmaar, and a mediocre painter - was born in Haarlem. Paul married three times, and had three sons by his third wife, all of whom became painters. Philip was the pupil of his father and of Jan Wijnauts. At nineteen, he eloped, and married in Hamburg where he worked with E.
