The Gainsborough portrait was painted about 1774, and had never left the house since it had first entered there. It hung on the stair-case and was in a very dilapidated condition. It realized £6 or £7(pounds) at the sale; the late Mr. Henry Graves of Pall Mall bought it a few days afterward for £300 and sold it for £1000 to the 7th Earl of Chesterfield who died (Dec. 1st 1871) before the transaction was completed. His executors did not retain the picture which was sold in 1872 to Baron Lionel de Rothschild for £1500. Some eight or ten years ago the picture was acquired by the late Mr. Charles Wertheimer. symbol in green ink: Ŧ
