heading in green ink: Portrait of a Lady Seated.

Three-quarter length. She is seen almost in full face, through slightly inclined to the left, and looks at the spectator. Her left forearm rests on the arm of her chair; her left hand holds a book which rests on her left knee. Her right hand is in front of her. She is in black, with a cap and ruff. Grey background. - Inscribed on the left at the top, "Aetat Dvae 56, Ano 1635." symbol in green ink: 'Outside the Rembrandt 'Portrait of his Mother' in the Museum of Amsterdam, I do not know of a greater portrait of a Dutch women than the one by Franz Hals, from the Yerkes Sale."
