symbol in green ink: Ŧ We have before us - portrait or no portrait a conception more deliberately romantic than any that we owe to this loftiest and most inspired of realists. The young cavalier, with perfect ease and grace, wears a rich, semi-oriental uniform, which but for tradition would be inclined to connect with Russia rather than with Poland. All solitary he rides across a sombre unpeopled country, which is shadowed by the abruptly rising crags of some mountain chain, crested with a fortress. The horse is of the heroic type, and suggests as its prototype no living beast, but some drawing by an Italian master of the Quatrocento based on a classical model; some such drawing as Rembrandt
