made by the same Velasquez of some other picture of his own, we would not see today thee corrections, which can be easily explained in the works before a living model and not before another picture. Besides the part afore-mentioned and which forms the best part of this work (together with the right sleeve) the rest can be seen painted with great simplicity - and without ostentation. The sash on the chest does not present creases or folds, and without doubt, the illusion of force and motion is complete. The background is of a smooth, warm and dark shade. The canvas is even, but, however, of the same thick-
