we have shown in that of Dulwich is accentuated on comparing it with that of Parma of an irreproachable design in its contour; the aspect of the former figure somewhat svelte, while that of the latter so well planted and so manly; the hands, vulgar, and even soft in the Dulwich portrait, are, in the new one, of a precise design, and the left one, a prodigy of realism and simplicity, is also of a very beautiful colour. Is this canvas authentic? Everything in it proclaims it to be; not only its irreproachable design, so characteristic of Velasquez, thanks to which he was able to create these figures unmistakable by their aplomb, by their elegance without affectation and so
