In the year 1640 Portugal was lost; in the year 1642 the Rosellos?; and in those calamitous days there was, amongst the nobles themselves, even someone who shamefully tried to proclaim himself king of the lands with the government of which he was trusted. The internal ruin and disorganization were going on at the same rate as the political disasters, and at last the peril increased to such an extent that the King opened his eyes - kept shut until then by the slyness of the favorite, always watchful in holding the King's attention away from the public affairs by gratifying his passions and providing him with frivolous amusements. Still there is left grateful record of
