[beginning of page 74] King Philips IV of Spain History T The year 1643 was a memorable one in the reign of Philip IV. The famous favorite, the Count-Duke of Olivares on the 17th of February, left the Royal Palace, having been politely dismissed by the King; for twenty two years had had held in his hands the destinies of Spain. It was through his bad ? and ill-fortune that eleven of the possessions of the Kingdom were threatened with ?, and it was necessary to make the wars of Flanders, Italy, ?, and America, in Spain itself, and in Catalonia, where the French armies succeeded in ? a large part of those provinces and some important ?.
