Was born in Bristol. His mother came of good family but was disowned on account of her clandestine marriage with Thomas Lawrence, an inn-keeper and "Jack of All Trades." Lawrence was an infant prodigy. At the age of six, he was sent to school in Bristol. year in green ink: 1777 Was removed two years later when his father failed in business. From this time, the young boy supported his parents by means if his crayon portraits. His family moved successively from Bristol to Durzes?, Oxford, Weymouth, and Bath. At Bath, Lawrence studied art under Prince Hoare. year in green ink: 1787 At eighteen, he went to London to study.
