heading in green ink: - History of Portrait -

This is the earliest portrait of Emma Hart paint- by Romney. It passed, presumably through Greville into Sir William Hamilton's possession, and was bought at his sale by Mr. Lister Parker. The tradition in the Parker family - writes Major W. Parker to us - is that Mr. Fawkes gave Lister Parker 50 gs. for the picture in 1816 or 1818; and that Mr. Fawkes of Farnley still has the receipt for the picture from Lister Parker, which is there called "Lady Hamilton and Dog." After the Grafton Exposition, the picture was sold for a very high price. Collections: Charles Greville - London Sir William Hamilton Lister Parker Fawkes, Farnley Hall, England L. Cronier - Paris.
