heading in green ink: - Sir George Romney - 1734-1802

One of eleven children, was born in Dulton, Lancashire. He was the son of Anne Simpson and John Romney, an ingenious cabinet-maker. Went to the Grammar School in Dendron, and year in green ink: 1744-1751 there worked with father in the carpenter-shop. Studied art under Christopher Steele. Worked five years in Kendal and several months in York and Lancaster. year in green ink: 1756 Married Mary Abbot. year in green ink: 1762 Went to London to seek his children [sic?], leaving his wife and children behind. year in green ink: 1764 Visited Paris. year in green ink: 1773-'75 Travelled through France and Italy. Took a house in Cavendish Square. Rapid success and rivalry with Reynolds. year in green ink: 1776 Met Hayley who had a powerful and rather bad influence over him for the rest of his life.
