heading in green ink: - Sir Henry Raeburn - 1756 - 1823

The son of a manufacturer, was born at Stockbridge, near Edinburgh. When he was six years of age, both of his parents died leaving him to the care of his elder brother. Was educated at Heriot's Hospital. year in green ink: 1771 Was apprenticed to Gilliland, an Edinburgh goldsmith and jeweller. His talent in portrait-painting was discovered by his master and David Deuchar. Went for a short time to the studio of David Martin, with whom he quarrelled. year in green ink: 1776 Painted his first oil picture and his practise rapidly increased. year in green ink: 1778 At twenty-two, he married one of his sitters, the rich widow of a Franco-Scottish Count and mother of three children. His marriage was very happy and they settled in a suburb of Edinburgh. year in green ink: 1785 Went to London where he met Reynolds.
