Collection, the Royal Collections at Buckingham Palace and Windsor, and that of the Duke of Westminster -- in the works of the mighty master, it may be questioned whether they can show anything of such supreme magnificence as this picture, the very possession of which confers distinction. in green ink: Ŧ in green ink:* The most distinguished of all Rembrandt's portraits of himself, the "Rembrandt Seated with a Stick in his Left Hand," in Lord Ilchester's Collection, was painted in the following year 1658. The best reproduction could give but an inadequate idea of this stately picture, the powerful effect of which is reproduced as much by the wonderful arrangement and characterisation as by the delicate color, in deference to which the light that breaks into the composition is more subdued and equal than usual..... The attitude and expression are so imposing
