Rembrandt Harmensz Van Rijn was born in Leyden. He was the son of a miller named Harmen Geritsz and of Neetje, the daughter of a baker. He was the fifth of six children, but his parents were sufficiently well-off to be able to give him the proper education. year in green ink: 1620 Was entered as a student in the Faculty of Letters at the Leyden University. He was soon placed in the studio of Jacob van Swanenburch [sic] with whom he stayed three years. Studied for six months under Pieter Lastman at Amsterdam. Practised painting for himself. year in green ink: 1634 Married Saskia van Uylenborch of a well-to-do Friesland family.
