The seventh of twelve children, was born at Antwerp. Was the son of Franz Van Dyck, a silk-merchant. His mother, Maria Cuypers, who died when he was but eight, was skilled in embroidery. year in green ink: 1609 Was first trained under Van Balen. Studied with Snyders and Seghers, under Rubens. year in green ink: 1620 Visited England and Holland, where he met Hals. year in green ink: 1622 Was called to Antwerp. year in green ink: 1623 Travelled in Italy, visiting Venice, Genoa, and Rome. year in green ink: 1632 Went to England as court-painter to King Charles I.
