Heading in green ink: Don Diego Rodriguez Velasquez de la Silva. 1599-1660. Year in green ink: 1599 Velasquez was born in Seville. His father, Juan Rodriquez de Silva, was descended of Portuguese nobility, and his mother Geromina Velasquez belonged to a noble Sevillian family. He received a good scholastic education. Studied art under Herrera el Viejo. Became the pupil of Francisco Pacheco. whose daughter Juana, he married. Year in green ink: 1622 Went to Madrid to study for a few months. Year in green ink: 1623 Was called to court by Olivares. Became court painter to Philip IV Fame and prosperity. Year in green ink: 1628 Met?? Rubens in Madrid Year in green ink: 1629 Visited Italy Year in green ink: 1631 Returned to Madrid. Year in green ink: 1648 Was sent to Italy by the King, to collect pictures and antiquities.
