heading in green ink: Theotocopuli El Greco. 1548(?)-1625.

Was born in Crete. Went to Italy - probably to Venice, first. year in green ink: 1570 Went to Rome where he was patrolized?? by the miniaturist, Guilio Clovio. Painted for the Cardinal Nepote?? Alessandro Farnese. year in green ink: 1577? Moved to Toledo. Marries, and had as son, Jorge Manuel Theotocopuli, who (in 1628) was appointed sculptor and architect to the Cathedral of Toledo.

Greco is said to have earned quite a fortune and to have spent it very ostentatiously on his house. It is recorded that he even had musicians play for him during his meals.
