- Pietro Aretino - 1492-1526

1492 The son of Luigi Bacci and of Lita, was born in Arezzo. When still very young, he write a sonnet against indulgences, and was forced to leave his native city. For many years, he was a book-binder in Perugia. Went on foot to Rome, and became a servant in the house of Chigi the Barber. Was later employed by Popes Leo X and Clement VIII. 1524 Composed sixteen sonnets for licentious designs of Giulio Romano, and was compelled to retire to Arezzo. Entered the court of Giovanni de' Medici. Returned to Rome. Made love to a cook for whom he wrote a sonnet. 1525 In consequence of this affair, he was stabbed five times in the breast, and was maimed by a Bolognese gentleman and rival lover, one Achille della Volta. He unsuccessfully appealed to the pope for
