Dear Sir
I have thought it might probably be agreeable to you to have some details regarding my paintings, which you have honored me by choosing during your recent sojourn in France.
A painting ought certainly to explain itself without additional information upon the subject, however, the items concerning country, seasons and dates may, I think, prove of some assistance.
The "Sunday Evening" which you were kind enough to buy at Mr Knoedlers, was painted 3 years ago in a little hamlet near Boulogne, lights more numerous than usual, give to this wild canvas an air of animation, if not of festivity.
The silhouette of a laborer brought back by his wife languidly and peevishly, adds to the summary indication of the habits of our North; a clouded moon overlooks all this. But how little our poor people care for the moon!!
"First Star" (Salon Champs de Mars 1892) is Jupiter announcing the coming night over the peaceful swamps; it is with us an impressive, meditative hour. I should have liked to put in it some thoughts which came to me in similar scenes, your appreciation of it, is precious and touches me.
The small panel of the plain of Chailly-Barbizon is a pretty old souvenir, going
