I put the background in from the interior of my studio there which is made up of the wood work out of the old Gilsey mansion which formerly stood on 82d street near East River. A portrait of Mrs. Millet by Sargent hung on the wall and the furniture with the exception of the sofa was in our drawing room. Stanford White lent me the sofa. The silver on the table was ?? by Richard Watson Gilder and part of it at least was old family silver with some historical interest attaching to it which I cannot now recall. The figure of the girl on the right was painted from a Mrs Chester a Swedish model whom I used to know before she married. Her husband was a telegraph operator and after 3 or 4 years of happy married life he died of quick consumption leaving her with two children. The elder died later of scarlet fever and she was obliged to return to posing to make her living. She went with me to Chicago as a model for my large decorations there and on her return married W. H. Lippincott the artist. Have not seen her since her marriage. I painted some ?? ?? ?? in the left hand figure
