G. FRANK MULLER 100 WEST 71ST STREET NEW YORK

January 25th 1918

Henry Clay Frick Esq. Dear Sir:- Permit me to thank you for the privilege of viewing your paintings + works of art + say that after devoting twenty years abroad to the study of old masters I was agreeably surprised to find so exceptional + representative a gathering (comparing in several instances with the choicest examples in the world's greatest museums) in a private collection. Nothing could be more radiantly beautiful than the Duncombe Gainsborough which master can nowhere be studied to better advantage nor is the great Van Dyck better represented in all his phases of portraiture betterstruck out under one roof-- the Cruikshank Raeburns are the Scotch master at his zenith and Veronese is probably not seen tostruck out so well outside of the great European Galleries -- the two Vermeers are priceless. I was charmed by the Taft + Van Horn Collections which however contain only a few works of the English School of comparable quality. In research work regarding old + modern masters I frequently have recourse to the catalogues of prominent collections and should be glad to know if such a compilation or brief enumeration of your masterpieces could be had as it would frequently prove most helpful. Thanking you for a reply I am yours very truly G Frank Muller
