Frick, Esq. Duveen Brothers INC. Page #5 Small Gallery 25854 A Large Decorative Shield in Limoges Enamel. French work of art of the Sixteenth Century. Signed by JEAN COURTOIS. From the collection of Sir Anthony de Rothschild and formerly in the collection of Monsieur de Monville. A large oval shield with concave centre. It is painted in brilliant enamel colours heightened with gold. In the centre is an allegorical representation of Gramatique, represented as holding a strange fountain of rock-work; in the background a ruined building, in which a professor is teaching; at her feet open books; at the top the signature of the artist I.C. The border is very rich. At the top is Jupiter, with the eagle at his feet; at the sides Bellona and Fame; at lower part, a mask and two reclining figures of captives. The whole of these accessories, excepting the figure of Jupiter, are taken from the border of the Portrait of Henry II. engraved by Nicholas Beatrizet, 1558. Exhibited at Manchester in 1857, and illustrated in the Catalogue; also exhibited at the Special Loan Collection, Victoria and Albert Museum, South Kensington, in the catalogue of which it is fully described. Illustrated and described in "Monuments Francais Inedits", par N.X. Willemin. Size 20 1/2 inches by 16-1/4 inches. $120,000-00 [T.368.005]
