deal, however obscure their history may be. We have sold this Bust to Mr. Frick, not merely as that of Mlle. La Clairon by Houdon, but with the express warranty that it is the finest of a lady by that Master now known, and this guarantee we are prepared to substantiate by actual proof by the greatest living authorities, as well as by our own opinion and responsibility. Although it is probably not necessary with a Bust as well known as this one to those versed in the works of Houdon, yet in order that there may be no possible question, we have sent abroad two large exact photographs of the Bust for submission to Mr. Paul Vitry of the Louvre, whom we daresay, you will concede as having the last word on this subject. We have asked Mr. Vitry to certify the photographs and to write us a letter. When we have received these credentials, we shall be very pleased to permit you to inspect them. In view of what we have said before, it is hardly necessary for us to reply in further to your criticism
