10th September, 1908.,

Dear Mr. Carstairs,

As you requested, I have turned up our records of the Picture of "Salisbury Cathedral" you purchased at the Holland Sale at Christies, and I find that we bought this in 1894 for Miss Mirehouse, 6 Sidney Place, Onslow Square, who stated that she had inherited it from her father, Mr. Mirehouse, who had bought it from Constable. I see in Christies' catalogue that this Picture is described as painted in 1826, and was originally in the possession of Bishop Mirehouse, who was then the Bishop of Salisbury. I think this is a mistake. Mr. Mirehouse was the cousin of the Bishop, and I do not think the Picture was ever in the Bishop's Collection. The Mr. Mirehouse who bought it was a friend of Constable's, and is several times mentioned in Leslie's "Life of Constable"; and from what Miss Mirehouse told us, I fancy the Picture must have been originally painted for Archdeacon Fisher, whose Portrait, and that of his wife, are in the foreground of the Picture walking down the Avenue. Not sufficient prominence having been given to the figure
