See notice of Tudor Exhibition in "Athenaeum" of 15 March, 1980m which quotes a legend mentioned by Baldinucci concerning the picture.

See also letter of Dr. A. Jessop to "Athenaeum" of 19 June, 1886. He quotes Roger North, who says it was picked up by pomerantius, painter to Gregory XIV, who joined together the broken pieces.

See note on Pomerantius in the "Athenaeum" of 3 July, 1886. he was probable Nicolo Circignani, painter to Gregory XIII, and was born in 1516. Gregory XIII was not pope until 1572.
