The Pomerantius mentioned by Roger North in the extract quoted by Dr. Jessop in the "Athenaeum" of the 19th inst. is probably either Nicolo Circignani, who was called "El Pomerancio" from his birthplace in Tuscany, or his son Antonio Circignani, who bore the same name. But the dates show that the story cannot have been told correctly. Sir Thomas More was beheaded on the 6. July 1535. Gregory XIV was not Pope until 1590. Nicolo Circignani was born in 1516. He was employed By Gregory XIII., but Gregory XIII. did not become Pope until 1572, w while Henry VIII. died on the 28th January 1547.
Where is the difficulty as to dates? Pomerantius may easily have been in England in 1535 where he was probably in the suite of the Papal Legate. In later life he was painter to Gregory XIII and Gregory XIV.
