HOLBEIN'S PORTRAIT OR SIR THOMAS MORE. See Notice of Tudor Exhibition in "Athenaeum" of 15.March 1890. which quotes a legend mentioned by Baldinucci concerning this picture.

See also letter of Dr. A. Jessop to "Athenaeum" of 19. June 1886. He quotes Roger North who says it was picked up by Pomerantius, painter to Gregory XIV. who joined together the broken pieces.

See note to Pomerantius in the "Athenaeum" of 3. July 1886. He was probably Nicolo Circignani painter to Gregory XIII. and was born in 1516. Gregory XIII. was not Pope till 1572.
