as it is generally admitted for quality to be his masterpiece – The price Lord Faversham wants for it is

£80,000. I need hardly say it is

a far finer + more covetable picture than "The Mill". I must tell you I am allowed to offer you this Picture in the strictest confidence, as if it came to the knowledge of the Nation, there would sure to be silly articles appearing in the papers about Lord Faversham's action. I am giving you herewith the first refusal of this fine Rembrandt, + I would earnestly ask you to give it your most serious attention. It is one of the finest Pictures in existence + is well worthy of being included

in such a fine Collection as yours. Should you wish anyone over here to see it on your behalf, I shall be glad to arrange it. I don't know whether I am right but I believe Messrs Knoedler sometimes advise you in these matters. However I have no doubt that you will consider the matter of sufficient importance to underlined:cable me on receipt of this letter + I trust you will do so. The Picture is dated 1659, Rembrandts best period. I am presuming you have Dr. Bode's book + can therein see all particulars. Awaiting your cable or reply, but I hope the former, Yours obediently, H. Silva White
