A FAMOUS GAINSBOROUGH. [[Annotated in ink: 26/2/16 Crossed out in blue ink: 25/2/16]] CONFIRMATION OF SALE. In "The Daily Telegraph" yesterday it was stated that we had received information– beyond mere rumour—that Gainsborough's magic landscape, "View in The Mall ; St. James's Park," had been sold from the Neeld collection, in which it had been for many years. We may now definitely announce that the famous picture has changed hands. Yesterday Mr. Louis Duveen, interviewed by our art representative, admitted that his American house, in association with Mr. Lockett Agnew, had bought the Gainsborough masterpiece. He was resolute in refusing to mention the purchase-price, but was agreeable to confirm our statement that it was "much in excess of that paid by the later Mr. Pierpont Morgan for the notorious lost-and-found Gainsborough 'Duchess.'" A reproduction of the beautiful "View in The Mall" appeared in our issue yesterday.
