COPY [[Stamped in blue ink: COPY IN in graphite: Painting LETTER BOOK]] New York, February 25, 1916.

My dear Mr. Duveen: I have decided to purchase that Gainsborough from you (View in the Mall, St. James's Park) and write you now for the reason that I do not wish you to have it cleaned before delivering it to me; I have reached the conclusion that it detracts from the pictures to have them cleaned. If, however, when it arrives it is thought better to gave something done to it, it will be time enough then. Yours very truly,

Mr. Joseph Duveen, Messrs. Duveen Brothers, 720 Fifth Avenue, N. Y.
